Tanille Johnston
Tanille Johnston is Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ from the WeWaiKai First Nation. She was born and raised in Campbell River and now lives there with her husband, two daughters, two dogs and cat.
Tanille completed both her undergraduate and Master’s degree in Social Work. She works as a Primary Care Manager with Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands as her geographic portfolio.
Her experience in politics started upon her entrance into the University of Victoria (UVic) when she secured the role of the Advocacy Councillor for the Native Student Union. Her start in municipal politics began in 2022 with entering her first-term position as a Councillor for the City of Campbell River, almost a decade of service on her Nation’s Lands Committee and her previous role with their Community Planning Advisory Committee. She’s also held seats at the UVic with the School of Social Works’ Equity Advisory Council, the UVIC Student Society Board of Directors and the University of Victoria’s Senate.
Tanille is passionate about equity, and the social determinants of health and culture. She grew up playing soccer, she loves cycling, playing volleyball, hiking and being in nature.
Some of her key priorities in politics have been increasing childcare spaces across the board, free and accessible post-secondary education, establishing better public transit and alternative methods of transportation, diverse and affordable housing, equitable access to healthcare and increasing the representation and participation of Indigenous persons in local, regional, coastal, provincial and federal decision making.
Tanille believes that thriving communities are built on collaboration, ingenuity, determination and healthy relationships amongst businesses, leadership, and community members. She acknowledges these players are vital in establishing safe, supportive, and healthy communities. She is ready to fight for her people, her community and equity for all.
